Hung Fa Yi Wing Chun Kung Fu originates from Southern China. The knowledge of this system is rooted in the famous Southern Shaolin Temple teachings of Time, Space, and Energy. Originally, the Wing Chun system has been a conceptually driven art, to which the methods of teaching it must be in accord with the goal of experiencing universal truth in action. A practitioner aiming to express themselves through the basis of principled action must look beyond mere technique. There are four main groups of Wing Chun that come from the Southern Shaolin Temple: Red Boat Opera Wing Chun, Red Bandana Boxer Wing Chun, Pao Fa Lien Wing Chun, and Chi Sim Weng Chun. Though the original southern temple was burned down in the late 1600’s, these four Wing Chun groups took shape around the mid 1800’s. This was the time of the Red Boxer Rebellion of China. Tracing its origins from the Southern Shaolin Temple, Wing Chun was taught and passed down for 150 years from the Southern Shaolin Temple into several underground revolutionary parties. The Red Boat Opera was a chapter of the revolution, and there were several accomplished martial artists identified as leaders of various Wing Chun lineages, such as Wong Wah Bo, Leung Yee Tai, and Dai Fa Min Kam. All of these figures were directly involved on the public/civilian front of recruiting members and spreading the name of Wing Chun. One leader from the private sector of the rebellion, Hung Gun Biu, was a member of the secret Red Bandana Boxer Society. This man was the Hung Fa Yi leader and was most responsible for keeping the art alive and intact throughout this tumultuous period. From Hung Gun Biu, the art was successfully passed down through several dedicated disciples, one from each generation of students. The responsibility of protecting the art was passed from Hung Gun Biu to Cheung Gung, from Cheung Gung to Wang Ting, from Wang Ting to Dr. Wang Ming, and from Dr. Wang Ming to Grandmaster Garrett Gee. Grandmaster Gee is the current leader and inheritor of Hung Fa Yi Wing Chun Kung Fu. Under Grandmaster Gee's guidance, Hung Fa Yi has blossomed into a large and healthy organization with members across the globe. Though the history of Wing Chun has always been politically driven from past eras, today the teaching of Wing Chun follows a new mission: preserving the art. Hung Fa Yi is a unique and rich lineage of Wing Chun. It is based on using time, space, and energy as efficiently as possible and achieving maximum results for minimum expenditure during conflict. Hung Fa Yi uses precise measurements, proven battlefield strategies and tactics, and focused training methods to build confidence and competence in the system and to ensure that the training is safe, realistic, and effective. For more than three centuries this art was taught in secret, but it has recently been brought out of secrecy. Hung Fa Yi of Arizona is proud to be the only Hung Fa Yi Wing Chun Kung Fu school in the state of Arizona authorized to offer this art to the public |
